Why does donnie darko see frank

We are already within the TU when both those events occur. Unfortunately we never find out what caused the TU to begin, it's just an unexplained phenomenon.

The Artifact is the first sign of evidence that a TU has been created and are always made from metal. In this case the Artifact is a giant jet engine. Where the Artifact originally comes from is never disclosed. It was most likely created as the TU was being formed. The TU is an exact copy of the PU with one of everything copied into it.

During the copying process there was a glitch and two jet engines were formed. The second engine has nowhere to go as it already exists so it's just dumped where the TU began, over Donnie's house. The Artifact makes the TU unstable; it can't handle having the anomaly of a duplicate object within it.

In order for the TU to unravel without forming a black hole it must once again be an exact copy of the PU. By removing one of the duplicate jet engines it will balance out the Universe allowing the TU to collapse safely.

The only way to remove the Artifact is to send it through a portal into the PU. This person is chosen seemingly at random and in this case Donnie is the chosen one.

As Donnie was at the epicentre of the TU this is most likely why he was selected. This person is usually blessed with some supernatural powers during their time in the TU to help them with their quest. Some of these include increased strength, mind control, the ability to conjure fire and water and telekinesis.

Donnie is not aware of his responsibilities at first though and he doesn't even know he is within a TU. As his journey continues he slowly starts to realise what is going on and what he must do. These people are very powerful and have the ability to move through time and talk to the Living Receiver through a Fourth Dimensional Construct. They also have some knowledge of the impending disaster and help guide the chosen one.

Frank is killed in the TU and therefore becomes one of the Manipulated Dead. The design may have come to him in a dream, Kelly says, or maybe subconsciously from his longtime love of Watership Down. It has to make the audience sit up in their seat and have a really intense response. For more revelations from the past four decades of entertainment, visit ew.

The first test of that response came early, when the cast and crew got their first glimpse of Frank only a few days into shooting.

Duval wore the Frank suit in almost every single scene on the movie, but on that day, a producer stepped in — and when Frank walked on set, Kelly could feel the mood change. So I knew it was working, and I felt the sense of relief. Eventually it will collapse upon itself, forming a black hole within the Primary Universe capable of destroying all existence. At the end of the movie, Donnie returns to the hillside and watches the jet engine get sucked into the time vortex, at which point time rewinds and he has an opportunity to do things differently, armed with his knowledge of what will happen.

Donnie is the only person able to close the tangent universe before it destroys his reality, but it will cost him his life in the process. Whereas at the start of the movie he is out of his room when the jet engine crashes into the house, at the end of the movie he voluntarily goes to bed - even laughing as he does so, having accepted what he must do to keep his family and Gretchen alive - and is crushed by the falling plane debris.

Is the Frank that Donnie sees throughout the movie the same Frank he shoots towards the end? You decide. The ending can be interpreted in various ways.

In the case of Frank the human-rabbit man, his origins are admittedly never made clear by the movie, but a little digging uncovers a couple of clues. Another interpretation of Frank is that he is the same bunny-man that Donnie shot, and that after his death his spirit was no longer bound by time. When Donnie is sent back in time, in the beginning of the film, it exists on a different plane.

Roberta Sparrow, otherwise known as Grandma Death, is a frequent yet unheard character in the story. But when Donnie discovers that the time travel book, The Philosophy of Time was written by her, she becomes a whole lot more important.

The Tangent Universe exists when a fourth dimension is corrupted. It is a highly unstable construct that only exists a few weeks before it collapses upon itself, and the collapse is capable of creating a black hole that could completely destroy the Primary Universe.

In the film, the Tangent Universe is created at midnight on October 2nd and lasts for 28 days in an alternate reality. Donnie is saved from a falling jet engine in the Tangent Universe because he is chosen as The Living Receiver, which is the person chosen at random to guide an artifact out of the Tangent Universe, and therefore prevent the Primary Universe from collapsing.

The Artifact is what makes the Tangent Universe unstable. It spontaneously appears, and is formed from metal, so in this instance it is the jet engine.

The Philosophy of Time Travel also explains how each person fits into the Tangent Universe, which is extremely important to understanding their roles in the ending. Donnie is the Living Receiver.
